TASK 1

Task 1 - Development and Design (40%)

Figure , Le miroir rouge / The Red Mirror, 1914 by Georges Lepape (Prints and multiples, Pochoir with metallic paint, 27.5 x 22 cm. (10.8 x 8.7 in.)) (https://www.artnet.com/artists/georges-lepape/le-miroir-rouge-the-red-mirror-a-wYmvbXLjXHJFI6suMqI3tQ2), Week 4(26/02/2026)

The Red Mirror by Georges Lepape conveys an unspoken feeling of femininity and control. This piece really speaks to me through the art style (adopting a fusion of primarily art deco, but also involving art nouveau and cubisim elements), as well through its calming colour palette and use of thin lines/ strokes. The artwork, to me, represents the perfectionism when it comes to getting ready, and the elegance and beauty in such an act. The colours compliment each other strongly and the expression on the woman's face seems focused, yet tranquil. These parallels tie the piece together creating a beautifully composed, simple, but visually interesting work. From a technical perspective, I chose this piece as I am naturally drawn towards works with a clear subject. I enjoy analyzing expressions, actions, and intentions behind paintings, as well as cultural contexts.

TASK 2

Task 2 - Development and Design (40%)

Figure 1.7, Sketch 3, Week 6(12/03/2026)

My third sketch includes my own composed idea of a woman contemplating her alternate selves and the perceptions she has of herself. This piece keeps my own visual voice intact, whilst reflecting on the message of the modern day women and self-reflection. I created two versions with changes to the palette for visual interest to be developed in Task 3, however the message remains intact. Instead of a tangible object of reflection, this conveys an emotional reflection going through a woman's mind. This can still depict the evolution of modern day women compared to Lepape's presentation of woman during World Way 1 and how modern women have more freedom of presentation and focus on many aspects of the self and expression rather than conventional beauty standards of the time . I further applied Lepape's use of design principles, with a bright contrasting pink used to convey the mental image, this establishes an asymmetrical balance in the piece and further keeps a harmonious muted palette to contrast against the pink. The proportions are reversed in this piece, keeping the subject at large. The use of a repeated face rather than shapes can also lead the eyes from the first mental image to the very last. This piece I feel is my strongest as it consists of the most originality and feels referenced rather than copied. The message is clear, the composition is thought out, this piece can face further developments and keep its overall standing.

TASK 3

Task 3 - Development and Design (40%)

Figure 1.8, A woman's perception_ Insha Thahira Rajab_ Task 3, Week 8 (22/03/2026)

A woman's perception, a digital artwork made on Ipad, tells the story of a modern day woman reflecting on her alternate selves, what she could have been/ different ways she feels she can present herself. She is centered and sports a deep purple hair, with her woman visions above her a bright pink, each with different skin tones to signify different backgrounds of what she thinks she could have been. This work emphasizes self-expression and the freedom of choices that are granted to modern day woman that some may not have the opportunity to have yet. I took inspiration from Georges Lepape, "The Red Mirror" which is a depiction of a woman during World War I. My work is a direct juxtoposition of that standing, and adopts Lepape's beloved art style and dull colour palette. Several design principles are also implemented in my work. My design is harmonious and consists of a balanced symmetry. The use of a bright contrasting pink against the unified muted palette creates an emphasis to the mental images. The background is purple yet connects to the subjects head, creating a distinct silhouette through the use of principle of figure-ground. All of this comes together to create a subtle yet powerful message to women out there, whilst remaining aesthetically pleasing to the eye.

REFLECTION

Design Principles, a module that really expanded my way of thinking, conceptualizing, and analyzing frameworks of design before creating artworks that I can truly be proud of. I learnt a variety of techniques that different artists and designers use in their work to make it stand out or even convey a message to audiences. I enjoyed conducting my own research, making my own personal conclusions, and learning to make my own design choices in my own work. My favourite task had to be task 3, I had a lot of fun making different variations of the design, and found it satisfying to play around with different elements and watch the improvement strengthen with each piece. Adopting techniques, art styles, and principles have not only enhanced my own art, but also taught me that there is so much yet to be learnt. However, at first I found myself struggling to create meaning with my work, relying on feedback, and unable to identify a strong design from a weak one. This module helped my trust my instict more and pay closer attention to detail. I hope to use all of these learning curves and moments, good, bad, and even advice/ feedback gathered from Dr Jin Chi to try to apply more context, theory, and technique in my work, rather than just a creative idea on paper. I definitely want to be more intentional with my work moving forward, and find the best possible ways to convey a message. However, I learnt to have more confidence in my own unique style, and keep my tone and visual consistent, confident that it will reach the right audience.
