INSTRUCTIONS

TASK

Task 1 - Proposal

You are to work as mixed groups of multidisciplinary skills to present an innovative concept that introduces unique solutions in relation with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, UNSDG (https://sdgs.un.org/goals) for the intended target audience.

Requirements

The project proposal sections:

1. Executive Summary - The summary or overview to explain the project and get buy-in. It’s the ‘elevator pitch’. Tell the client why you’re undertaking this project, what you’re doing to succeed, what success will look like and what UNSDGs will be addressed with which 4IR technology solution.

2. Background – The brief history about similar projects in the market or the world. Contextualize and explain why now is the time to execute this project. Show the client how prior projects have fallen short of expectations.

3. Resources - Tell your client what you need to be successful which could include money, materials, 4IR related technology and personnel.

4. Solving the Problem(s) – Define the problem you aim to solve and explain why you think it’s important to solve that particular problem(s). Frame the problem as an opportunity, a potential market, or make a case for the investment with reference to which UNSDG target(s). To win over your client, persuade with the unique selling point that is suited to solving the problem(s). Highlight any project management techniques, skillsets, and resources you are bringing to the table, especially the use of 4IR related technologies.

5. Budget and Timeline – Produce a schedule for all the deliverables, milestones that once achieved, will let you know that the project is on track. And let your client know how much it will cost to undertake this project by explaining how and why you plan to spend their money.

: research

Our group chose the "Food Aid Foundation" as Group 3, Section 2. We started of by making a group chat on Whatsapp for communication and discussion. Nausheen volunteered as group leader:

We began discussing a suitable time for an online meeting to come up with initial ideas before our next class:

We did this by making a word doc to dump our initial ideas:

We decided these were good as a rough idea but not to dive in deeper until we have been familiarized with the overall foundation and their goals and challenges faced: what issue we need to be tackling. We referred the project document to gather a quick introduction on the kinds of questions we have to be asking ourselves. We learnt that we had to conduct interviews to better understand our target audience and/ or other parties involved.

EMPATHIZE - current interview, persona, miro planning process (understanding our target audience)
DEFINE - define the main problem and how to tackle it
IDEATE - come up with solutions/ sketches/ concepts
PROTOTYPE - Create actually solutions
TEST - test it out in real world settings/ scenarios

During Week 2, we scheduled a Teams Meeting with Dr Leong Sze Ying who briefed us on the "Food Aid Foundation", where we thoroughly understood and resonated with the foundation and their current obstacles as well as their target audiences.

We jotted down our notes and the basis of the briefing:

Afterwards, we asked her some of our concerns and got to work on our very on Miro-board to dump our findings:

During week 3, we understood we had to fill in the official miro board and include our research, findings, observations, and analysis on FoodAid to conduct our interviews before progress on our proposal and solutions. Every week we made updates to this board. This is the define and ideation stage:

After filling up the define and empathize sections, such as contextual research and problem statement (POV), we started creating user journey maps, creating 3 user personas of individuals we believe will benefit from this foundation.

Simultaneously, we were informed that we needed to interview Food Aid Foundation to so we carefully crafted a set of questions, categorizing through importance, and separating from which questions to ask Food Aid, Impact lab, or both, through the use of emojis:

The shrimp emoji signifies Impact Lab, whilst the microscope emoji represents Food Aid Foundation.

The Interview went well, our group asked many questions, this was the summary of answers:

We proposed the idea for an app, which Dr Leong was extra enthusiastic about. We drafted a basic plan:

Mr Mike sent an email regarding addressing the B40 communities, as those questions were left unanswered:

We had a second meeting, where more questions were answered:

Nutra Proposal by Fathimath Nausheen

REFLECTIONS

Experience: This module was an extremely content heavy research based module, which taught me the significance of teamwork and division of tasks. Classes were essential for feedback and consultation, but most work was to be done at home. Working alongside Food Aid has been both pleasant yet pressuring to meet expectations with our output. Overall, working on this proposal helped me understand how to tackle issues and divide them into stages: Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, Test.

Observations: Through observations, we were able to create SWOT analysis, contextual research, and understand how competitors operate in order to formulate a suitable design solution. Observations allow us to better understand Food Aid and the environment they operate in, as well as empathize with those in need, therefore creating user personas. By observing past pupil's work, we were able to understand the content and delivery structure of each task.

Findings: I found the process of creating a design solution to a complex industry related issue quite interesting and applicable in future work environments. Through a lot of research conducted, we found many gaps in the market and understood what is being expected of them and why they cannot deliver. Through these findings, we were able to make our slides and record all findings on the miro board.
