PROJECT 1 & 2: ANIMATED INFOGRAPHIC POSTER [20%]
TIME FRAME: WEEK 03 - WEEK 05
DEADLINE: WEEK 05
MARK: 20%
DESCRIPTION:
After time exploring media and learning about information design, you
will now develop an infographic that presents a series of different
processes as visuals rather than text.
REQUIREMENT:
Your main intention is to analyze the “delivery mechanism’s” that affect
the outcomes of your infographics. Though content is important, however
the aim of this presentation is too look at what makes an infographic
presentation work or does not work. This includes content but only as
one of the many components of an infographic:
Part 1: Infographic poster (10%)
INSTRUCTION:
1. Choose 1 infographic poster reference from Internet (Please
consult before proceed)
2. Redesign the poster into A4 size. Sketch the idea and process
3. Redesign and simplify the poster based on visual hierarchy
& typography
4. Simplify the poster's design based on color, shape &
pattern
5. Attach your final poster on E-Portfolio with explanation and
reflective writing
: planning
I found 3 badly designed infographics for consultation. I was leaning toward
the last design as I felt there was many issues with it. I liked how simple
it was, yet poorly designed, up till the sizing of the infographic itself. I
kept the other 2 as backup in case sir did not approve.

During consultation, sir agreed this was a badly designed infographic, and a
lot can be done to improve this.

Keeping his feedback in mind, I analyzed the chosen infographic and made
note of my ideas on what to add/ improve on.
I then looked through potential references that I can incorporate in my
work.
As I was advised to use the images already provided, I needed my
infographic to reflect this style in nature. I also decided to refer to
my rejected concept for group FLIP proposal, and reuse certain qualities
such as font.

: digitizing
Afterwards I proceeded with digitizing the poster, and started with a
simple design to map out the overall aesthetic. The first step was to
crop out the images, as directed by Mr Fauzy.
This is the basic design concept with my own added text and images
resized to scale.
I decided to include sun icons to make it more like the original:
I made a first draft inspired by my visual references, with a clean
white background and formatted text.
I decided to change the woman to a more high quality image, as the one I
was using pixelated too much and ruined the overall poster design. I
wanted it to feel more vintage and reduce the white space by including a
coloured background.
I looked through my original references and wanted to make the colours
yellow and green pop. I decided to remove the image of the person
altogether as I found it too distracting, and use the main elements as
requested by Mr fauzy. To keep the lawn grass effect, I used a grain
texture.

Part 2: Minimal Animated Infographic
INSTRUCTION:
1. Animate your infographic poster into one static loop animation page
2. Loop duration in between 15-30 second
3. Size: 1080 x 1920 px (Vertical Video) upload to your own Youtube
channel
: planning
I went through samples Mr Fauzi provided as base examples on how the
animation can be looped:
I tried to find a video style where collage elements are applied and try
to combine this into an infographic layout:
: digitizing
I started off by making my digitized poster on photoshop to better
understand the layout of how my final should look.
I used the same style but kept elements more relevant to the feedback
provided in week 4, to make it more suitable for social media. I
imported my design from Photoshop and decided to include the grain
texture in after effects itself:
I removed the text layers and rewrote them in after effects, so that
they can be animated as its own instead of as an object.
I started with a basic animation to map out the timings of when each step should be highlighted in the animation:
This animation did not feel as though it met the criteria to loop, so I
used this as a basic reference with no grain. This was my second attempt
with different looping, and other animation effects, including a grain
texture.
I felt as though the images felt flat, so I imaged traced on Adobe
Illustrator to retain the original style but keep the images more
stylized.
This is the difference between regular vs image trace:
This was my result with a more stylized (comic book look as per
feedback) approach:

FEEDBACK
Week 3: For the
poster chosen, make it more academically friendly, do not include
"beer" as part of the process. For something more unique, use the
same images used but rework it in a better design to emphasize the
redesign process (maybe remove the background of each image
used).
Week 4: the "spray" element should only consist of the wrist. Make
number "5" the biggest to highlight emphasis and make the final feel
like a comic book style to engage audiences. Make the font bigger
and ensure that the video is vertical. Maybe rearrange composition
to a zig-zag for the final animation.
REFLECTION
Project 1: Project 1 gave me thorough insight on what it takes to redesign
creative work, what elements need to be considered/ cut off. I had to
find ways to capture the essence of the original, yet make it my own,
considering the overall aesthetic, style, and content. I learned how
to take critical feedback and apply it into my work, going to Mr Fauzi
for revisions and discussing how this poster will be viewed by
audiences. I found this a bit of a challenge when it came to layout
and overall composition, as well as extracting original images as
requested.
Project 2: Project 2 proved to be a brain wrecker. Working with after effects
and real images was quite the burden, as the final output was not
conveying the right aesthetic and was feeding into a very old school,
yet out-dated design. Many revisions had to be made and changing of
art style to fit the animation layout and style. I spent the
most amount of time on this project. However, I took pride in the
learning objectives, watching multiple tutorials and gaining
experience through trial and error.
