PROJECT

Project 2 - Packaging Design Analysis

Duration: 4 Weeks

Weight: 30%

Submission: Digital Submission + Group Presentation

Overview

Take the brand and packaging identity you established in Project 2 and bring it to life in the retail world. Your goal is to design a cohesive "merch drop" collection consisting of FIVE (5) distinct items and pitch the concept to the class.

The 5 Required Items

Your collection must include the following:

  • One (1) POP (Point-of-Purchase) Display: A freestanding or countertop display designed to hold or showcase your product in a retail environment.
  • Four (4) Merchandise Items: Original branded goods (e.g., apparel, tote bags, tumblers, limited edition collectibles, stationery) that specifically appeal to your target audience.

Phase 1: Research & Concepts

Analyze your Project 2 brand values and packaging aesthetics.

Develop 5 concepts that feel like a natural extension of the brand.

Goal: Ensure the items are things your target audience would actually buy.

Phase 2: Design & Mock-ups

Design the graphics and structural elements for all 5 items.

Create high-quality digital mock-ups. These should be realistic renders that look like professional product photography.

Ensure strict visual consistency (color palette, typography) with your Project 2 packaging.

Phase 3: Strategy & Presentation

Promotional Strategy: Outline specific channels (Social Media, Influencers, Events) and tactics you will use to launch the merchandise.

The Pitch: Prepare a slide deck presentation to "sell" your ideas. You will present your designs and strategy in Week 14*.

RESEARCH

For our headphones, we started off going with a futuristic visual direction. We wanted to keep the style, graphics and colours following a pixel matrix design.

Figure 1.1 Early Visual Reference

This was our final chosen visual direction, including fonts, colours, and graphics:

Each of us did our own headphones research, focusing on a couple brands we thought were interesting. We also divided our focus onto each member. The brands I chose were Marshalls, and Beats by Dr Dre. I was focused on finding out about the styles of physical packaging and how to keep ours interesting, and I felt these brands had a good take on how to do so.

Marshalls incorporated a very classical cardboard style packaging, feels cheap yet still comes off as premium and iconic. A Marshall's guitar packaging concept also came up on Behance, which I also felt was very visually interesting.

Then came Beats packaging. They use a magnetic box, with included accessories. This feels premium, yet still easy to operate. I like their strong visual branding and use of colour to emphasize the quality of the headphones.

SKETCHES

Afterwards, we decided to sketch out some packaging box ideas, as well as logo sketches. These were my packaging sketches:

Figure 1.8 Sketch #1

I came up with two concepts. One was a classic magnetic box which opens from the center, much like Beats. I was considering the inclusion of a headphones pouch or case, as our product was targeted to university students who may travel or carry these a lot. However after consultation with Mr Shamsul, decided against it due to price and inconvenience.

My second was a more fun, interactive and conceptual packaging design. Much like the Marshall guitar concept, I decided to focus on a simple rectangular shape but to replicate that of a guitar amplifier, to highlight the sound quality of our headphones, almost like an amplifier or speaker. This is also keeps it fun and interactive to students, and can be eye-catching from competitors. Once consultation, Mr Shamsul did agree it was fun, but can steer away from its intended audience and feels directed towards music-lovers instead.

Next was the logo sketches. We decided to use the square and circle shapes from the font chosen to keep the style consistent and circle back to the central theme. These were my sketches:

Sir was happy with these and asked to progress with the first 4 concepts, digitize and experiment.

FINAL VISUAL DIRECTION

When making changes and updating our moodboard, Adam and I decided that we needed more reference photos for the Pop-Up display and Adverts. We visited Pyramid to take some pictures of these examples. Here's what I got:

After a lot of feedback, revision, and redirecting what we wanted our headphones to look and feel like, I created an updated moodboard which we used as our reference point:

RESEARCH DOCUMENT

We compiled all of our research in a word document. Here are our findings:

LOGO DIGITIZATION

The next step was to digitize my final chosen logo. I explored many variations on illustrator before deciding on the final one in class with sir's feedback:

DESIGN DRAFTS

Each of us created our own draft box design on illustrator to show sir. The finalized design would then be cleaned up and finished for submission. This were some of my references:

This was the process of my design concept:

I took inspiration from the pixel grid matrix style, and wanted our box to feel futuristic and creative, to catch the eye of our audience. This was my final design:

After submitting our designs to sir, he picked Adam's design as it felt more direct to communicating the headphones, the information was organized and clear to read. This was the design:

Figure 3.5 Chosen Mockup Box Design

We had decided to remove the pink from our palette (Mood board was updated with this change) as we felt as though it clashed too much and black and green kept it simple yet effective.

I did the back design for the chosen box while Adam worked on the die-lines for the mockup. I looked at headphone box references to gain an idea of what is to be expected of the back, I also generated a very very base picture on chat gpt just to gather how much information can be put at the back.

I decided to make some headphone graphics of the headphones at different angles for the back cover. I removed the background, and photoshopped our logo onto the headphones:

This was my final back cover design:

DIE-LINES

Adam was working on the die-lines as I was designing the back of the box. We had each decided to use his headphones for the measurements as well as in our visuals (included our logo) so he was able to measure them at home. This was some of his process:

FEEDBACK

Week 8

Specific Feedback: Very comprehensive research. Sketches looks interesting but I would suggest to proceed with square box. Just use black and green for the colours as more would be too distracting.

Week 9

Specific Feedback: Use the shapes from your custom font as part of the logo design, simple and clean. Take inspiration from 2000's PlayStation advertising when showcasing your visual direction. Can we go with Thahira's version for the logo? The first 4 looks cool.

Week 10
Specific Feedback: Go with Adam's Design for the box. Work on the manual for the final project. Focus on the box and die-lines for this task.

REFLECTION

Experience: Project 2 was very experimental and intuitive. Classes helped to gain feedback, and it was important to not only observe real-life packaging examples but also look at ways to be creative, and rebrand a company to serve its audience. I found this project fun, it allowed me to explore different design styles. Our group worked well together, presenting a number of ideas to show sir.

Observations: Through observing industry standard boxes, the different topes of boxes, folds, we were able to decide on a magnetic box design for our headphones. I also observed headphone box designs, understanding what information needs to be placed and where.

Findings: Through my findings, I was able to gather different understandings of the kinds of boxes and placement in the market. I understood certain trends, how colour palettes should be limited, and what sort of aesthetic and colour that headphones company use, and how these attract the right audiences.
