PROJECT 4

PART 1: IDEA DEVELOPMENT (5 marks)

For Part 1, we have to grasp what idea of ourselves and what we are trying to portray in our self-reflection.

Writing a biography is the best way to do so, and provide our tutor with details on how we perceive ourselves which can later on be reflected in our work.

1. Write a Biography about yourself

INTRO

I’m Thahira. A (just turned) 20-year-old with commitment issues. Commitments to a single trait, and a single definition are something I lack.

PARAGRAPH 1

I’ve spent half of my life wondering who I am. And the other half recreating myself until I am fragments of people and things and feelings around me. My mind is oftentimes a clutter of things I don’t say out loud. Yesterday, my favourite colour was blue, and today it’s pink. Who knows what it’ll be tomorrow?

PARAGRAPH 2

I’ve spent the other half of my life investing in the people I love. Those change too, but not all. People are what challenge me to grow, to build myself the most. Some prepare me, some are lessons, and some and there just to love. I keep all of them close, so close they become a part of me. I wear the jewelry of my mother and the anger of my father.

SUMMARY

I think what truly defines us is everything we go through. Each phase, each developing stage. A cocoon to a butterfly. I am every person I have been, reborn and then dead once again.

Then we have to explain what kind of art direction we are taking, possibly relating it to our biography. We have to explain the approach we hope to take and how we will execute this.

2. Write a statement about your work

INTRO

I want my work to portray the way my mind works. It is a reflection of myself.

PARAGRAPH 1

Full of different colours, mediums, textures, and proportions, this project needs to reflect on how I live my life with evergrowing change and chaos, yet it comes together in harmony to signify art. From afar, it may look like a mess but when you pay attention to the details, it makes perfect sense.

PARAGRAPH 2

I like applying mixed mediums, collage, and surrealism styles to my work. I take inspiration from Pinterest. I am more drawn to black and white but the use of colour adds more personality.

SUMMARY

By the end of this project, I hope to create a poster and video short that truly captivates both my personality and my artistic direction. It is abstract, yet makes sense when put together, much like the thoughts in my mind.

3. Study and Gather all relevant information about your topic

Afterwards, we have to pick 3 poster design inspirations that I gathered from Pinterest. I believe these styles truly reflect the aesthetic I want to achieve and a depiction of my personality. I enjoy collage styles and mixed media effects, a more maximalist piece.

PART 2: DESIGN DIRECTION (5 marks)

The second part of the project involves establishing the poster design.

1. Sketch Mock-up Poster

We start off by sketching out 2 mock-up posters, showcasing the art style and images we will be using.

SKETCH PROGRESS #2

2. Create a digital poster based on your sketch

I digitized the sketch using the relevant pictures. For poster 1, I adopted a graphical collage style approach and for poster 2, a more comic book style. Both have simillar aesthetics but a different approach.

PART 3: EXECUTION AND POST PRODUCTION (10 marks)

1. Final Poster:

I believe that the first poster really potrays who I am and can be animated more easily with mmore moving objects. For the final, I added a touch of grain effects to keep it rustic.

FINAL POSTER

TITLE: Fragments of the Mind

ARTIST STATEMENT: I am a cluster of ideas and moments and I learn that this collage of thoughts is what makes me who i am: Thahira.

PART 4: SUBMISSION

This was my final video submission. I used After Effects to edit the music and motion of frames.

REFLECTION

Project 4 helped me not only find a deeper understanding of myself but also indulge in self-expression with my very own art style. I was able to take my thoughts and inner-most personality and translate them through a creative medium to audiences. Working with Photoshop and After Effects was much smoother due to the experience gathered from previous assignments. My work is not only a reflection of who am I, but what my aesthetic is and how I present myself, down to the style to the choice in music.
