INSTRUCTIONS
ASSIGNMENT
Assignment 1 -
Fly Me to the Moon
Listen to one Frank Sinatra song from the list provided:
- Fly me to the moon
- The way you look tonight
- Come fly with me
- Girl from Ipanema
- New York, New York
Conduct research on the lyrics, storyline, and setting. Then create a suitable album cover based on a "moment" in the song. Establish a fixed art style when doing so. Illustrated typography must be included. Foreground mid ground and background must be considered and illustrated. Post a moodboard along with the completed work to show in-depth analysis and research done.

:research
I was already familiar with many of Frank Sinatra's songs and immediately wanted to design a cover for his cover of "The Girl from Ipanema". I knew I wanted a beachy, earthy, and feminine feel to it, and that the main subject had to be the muse of the song (as shown in the lyrics). I also had to determine my art style so I did research on these styles. I decided to go for the "art decor" style because it matches Frank Sinatra music and it gives off a vintage and poster-look. I got to work gathering inspiration, colour palettes, and researched lyrics to fabricate my mood board.

:digitizing
After drawing out the sketch, I started digitizing in Adobe Illustrator. I used a custom-made font which I traced. This was my final work:

I tried adding more texture but personally I preferred the one without texture.

:animation
I worked on my animation on Adobe After Effects. I watched many tutorials to achieve this and liked the idea of the text working through a conveyer. I needed the water to move outwards, much like the ocean would, and decided to make the girl enter the frame to have more movement.

I was quite happy with how it came out. This was my first time working with aftereffects and it ended up looking cleaner and smoother than I expected.
FEEDBACK
This work is good, but again feels a bit flat and could use more layers to it. Making the subject, foreground, and background more clear can help fix this. Additionally, the animation should be a perfect loop according to the brief and this cuts off abruptly before starting again. A more clean and repeated loop is advised.
REWORKED
I made some tweaks to the final and reworked it according to feedback for a better result. Here is my resubmission:

REFLECTION
Assignment 1 taught me a lot of history. I did a lot of research on different art styles and the meaning of the lyrics in Frank Sinatra's "The Girl From Ipanema" to create this detailed and meaningful album cover. I enjoyed using the pencil tool more than the pen tool, and this assignment gave me the creative liberty to use this. I loved experimenting in a new art style from my own and I was very interested in designing an Illustrated album cover, as I see on spotify. By far, my favourite assignment yet because of the free illustrative aspect, I also enjoy drawing human subjects and designing this character proved to be a lot of fun.
